Our Story

…which has its roots in Grandma Lola’s kitchen. As a kid, Ricky Alverio could often be found by his abuela’s side, learning the finer points of cooking great meals from scratch. Her family-favorites, roasted pork and beef fricassee, with her secret combination of love and spices were just the beginning!

The only thing that could make Lola’s roasted pork world-famous was to put it between two of Ricky’s secret recipe, lite, airy and warm savory waffles; NOT your ordinary breakfast waffle, they’re made with fresh herbs and are not like anything you’ve ever tasted! And so “Lola’s Cuban Waffle” was born and is pure perfection. And, since cows produce beef and milk, Ricky also added his Bang’n Brisket to the menu, ensuring that you will not leave Funky Cow hungry!

Ricky did not stop there. All of his secret recipes are made with the freshest ingredients and his homemade sauces that take your pallet to the next level of cravings! Mooo’ving from Savory Sandwiches to Sweet Desserts; for dessert lovers, he pairs sweet waffles with homemade ice cream and toppings like warm caramelized apples or fire-roasted marshmallows for a result that is beyond sublime decadence.

Combining Grandma Lola’s recipes with Ricky’s brilliant ideas resulted in a laid-back, ultra-friendly café, called FUNKY COW at the corner of Bellevue and Central Avenue in Hammonton, New Jersey. The opening of Funky Cow flagship cafe in 2016 was met with stellar reviews and this enthusiasm has not stopped since, with customers traveling hours just to relieve their cravings for Lola’s Cuban Waffle Sandwich and many other Funky Cow delectable sandwiches and platters.
